impressionism
Impressionism was an art movement that gained prominence in the 19th century in France. The movement became popularity because of works of artists such as Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Vincent Van Gogh. This movement was in stark contrast to the popular art movements of the time that focused on complicated depictions of gods and demons. The Impressionist artists wanted to expand the horizons of art during that era, and did so by simply painting what they say. They painted landscapes with bright colors and feathery brushstrokes in order to depict exactly what they say, capturing the movement and light of life. They painted still lifes with incredible detail and precision. Also, a popular method for Impressionist artists was to paint en plein air, which meant to paint outside while looking at the landscape that they were painting. This technique was revolutionary for the time, and it was a way for the Impressionist artists to capture the subjects of their paintings while being able to immerse themselves in the beauty of nature. The artists thought that the world was incredible and thought that being able to capture its natural state on their canvases would be an incredible feat. Originally, they were met with much discontent, but later received universal praise for their revolutionary tactics and being able to capture the magnificence that naturally occurred in our world. They had accomplished what they were trying to do, which is to show the people that the world was mind-blowing on its own, and art should be a way to demonstrate that.
Impressionist artists, despite the fact that they were French, had accomplished the American Dream. They had originally tried to conform to the popular artistic techniques of their time period, but had not found their lifestyle fulfilling. They found beauty in the natural world and wanted others to experience the same meaning that they felt when immersed in nature and meaningful relationships. Therefore, they created their own style to try to spread the feeling to the rest of the world. They painted outside, so that they could continue their profession of painting while experiencing the world’s beauty. They were originally criticized for their tactics, but this is because people were ignorant towards change, and weren’t willing to accept their new ways. The American Dream is similar to that. People are often hostile to the idea of simplifying and living a more meaningful life and making new companions, but once they do so, they find themselves overwhelmed with happiness and meaning. This is what the Impressionist artists were able to do, and even though their movement occurred in France, it represents the foundation of the modern American Dream.
The works of artists is a great way to tell their desired lifestyles and life paths, these same things are more recognizable when evaluating the actual lives of these same people.
