"what a Wonderful world"
by louis armstrong
“I see trees of green, red roses too. I see them bloom, for me and you. And I think to myself, what a wonderful world,” Louis Armstrong sings. This song is world renowned, and whenever it is played, you’ll hear people singing along to Louis Armstrong’s great, raspy voice. Though, people often don’t take notice of how much meaning is hidden in the lyrics. “I hear babies cry, I watch them grow. They’ll learn much more, than I’ll ever know. And I think to myself, what a wonderful world,” Armstrong sings. Armstrong, in this song, really just recognizes the beauty of the world and just how wonderful it simply is. People often get distracted in life and don’t often realize how amazing of a place they live in. Many songs have lyrics that talk about topics and concepts that are honestly not very important, yet this song is different from the normal. The lyrics in the song demonstrate that Louis Armstrong discovered how great the world is and used the medium in which he was popular to try to get others to notice the same thing. It doesn’t take items or money for one to think the world is great. It takes noticing how great the world is in its natural state, with green trees and red roses, and noticing how individual people are and how monumental their accomplishments have been. Louis Armstrong notices both of these, talking about the red roses of the world and watching babies grow. He thinks of these aspects, because they are the ones that make him realize what a wonderful world this is.
One of the main concepts of the American Dream is to be able to witness and understand the beauty of the world. Louis Armstrong is able to demonstrate this aspect of the American Dream in “Wonderful World”. He, in the song, is able to see the simple beauty of the world. It is something that is often forgotten, this beauty, and it is something special when someone is able to notice it. Louis Armstrong achieved the lifestyle that is desired today because he found greatness in the true world, not being held back by materialism and matters that are meaningless in the long run. The simple colors of the trees and of flowers is something that is looked over by people who take the world for granted and are caught up in their repetitive life cycles. If one can put their repetitive life on hiatus for a minute in order to experience life in its most natural state, they’ll be able to see why their past lives need to be forgotten so that they can venture to experience life in its deepest meaning. Louis Armstrong, in “Wonderful World” is able to see the beauty in the world, which is the first step in accomplishing the American Dream.
As music is a form of art, it is largely relatable to other forms of art, such as visual art.
