minimalism
In music and the arts, minimalism is a style that uses elements that have been stripped down. The artistic minimalist movement gained prominence in the 1960s and the 1970s, with famous artists such as Donald Judd and John McCracken. Minimalist art is very simple, using very few colors and very few designs, taking away all of the excess that is present in more complicated art genres and movements. Minimalism found a way to be artistic while removing all of the complications of art, not focusing on making things looks realistic or blending color. Minimalism epitomizes art that has been stripped down to its roots. Even though it’s simply an art movement, minimalism still represents the mindset that simplification can be the key to life.
Even though it is only an art movement, minimalism shares its philosophies with the philosophies that are behind the modern American Dream. This art movement is able to strip down the excess that was holding the artists back, because they were getting criticized for their works not being in depth enough or not being detailed enough. These artists have found a way strip down art as it was before and create something new and simple, yet just as beautiful. The American Dream is to be able to strip down life and simplify in order to create a life just as beautiful, but with more meaning. Minimalist artists are achieving the American Dream equivalent in the art world. The artists have been able to find more meaning in their works, without having to weigh it down with excess. They got rid of the excess waste and achieved the artistic dream they were striving for, and people have to do the same in their lives in order to change so that they can continue their existence with more meaning and purpose.
Though very separate in techniques, the philosophy behind the minimalistic movement is largely similar to that of Impressionism.
